On January 29, Actor Jussie Smollett was in Chicago performing a show. Actor Jussie Smollett was then brutally attacked by two men while putting an unknown chemical on Smollett and putting a rope around his neck. From CNN, Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi told CNN, “it was worn like a necktie but shaped like a noose.” The Chicago Police stated Smollett saw the two men yelling racist and homophobic slurs during the attack and “This is a MAGA country”.
Smollett said he fought back at the attackers to protect himself. After the attack, Smollett took himself to Northwestern Hospital and authorities have now said he is in good condition. Although the attackers have not been caught and fled from the scene before authorities could arrive. According to ABC News, There were more than 20 surveillance cameras in the area of the incident and now investigators are looking through them for the men’s identities that were said by Anthony Guglielmi who is a Chicago police spokesman. When the attack happened, Smollett was speaking to his manager Brandon Z. Moore on the phone during the attack. Moore says he heard all the slurs during the call. Although the two didn’t turn in their phones.
Even before the attack, Jussie Smollett was receiving hateful death threats in his mail saying “You will die black f*g” These could be links to the people who attacked him. People have been critical about the incident and have said it was a false report. Smollett replied saying. “Just because there has been a lot of stuff that has been said about me that is absolutely not true, there are just a couple of points that I wanted to make really quick,” he said. “I was bruised, but my ribs were not cracked. I went to the doctor immediately — I was not hospitalized. Both my doctors in L.A. and Chicago cleared me to perform but said to take it easy, obviously. And, above all, I fought the f— back.”(People)
Later, the police agreed to look further into the attacks. On February 13, The police arrested two brothers named Abel and Ola Osundairo from in Chicago from a trip. The brothers were about to be charged with the hate crime, but the two brothers finally came clean. The brothers reported that Smollett reported a false police report. The Osundairo brothers said that they were both payed $35,000 to “attack” Smollett. Later, Smollett gave up and surrendered to authorities. Smollett faked the incident because he was unimpressed with his pay check.
He was charged with 16 hoaxes and lying to authorities. He pleads not guilty for all the charges His next court date has planned to be on April 17th. Also, Jussie Smollett is facing up to 3 years in prison because of a false report and disorderly conduct.
