Earlier this week, Sony Pictures released the trailer for Ghostbusters: Afterlife; the true sequel to Ghostbusters 2. There was a reboot of the franchise in 2016 that consisted of an all female cast of Ghostbusters. That was considered a reboot, since it had members from the original cast as new characters.
The new trailer starts with a backstory from a character Trevor played by Finn Wolfhard. This story takes 30 years after the events of Ghostbusters 2. He states that he and his family moved to his grandfather’s old farm with his mother Callie, played by Carrie Coon, and sister Phoebe who is played by McKenna Grace. He continues by saying they had to move to the farm because of their family’s financial troubles. Although it isn’t explicitly stated, the family was hinted to be descendents of Dr. Egon Spengler of the original ghostbuster. Trevor and Phoebe begin to make friends with the people they spend time with in town, similar to Netflix’s Stranger Things. The children were met with seismologist Mr. Grooberson who tells the children that he was a Ghostbusters fan after the children show him a ghost trap, which he first thinks is a replica.
The trailer did a good job with not showing too much, too fast. The rest of the trailer shows the kids with Ecto-1 car from the original movie, along with short cameos from Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Slimer. The movie is set to release on July 10th, 2020, but more content containing details on the movie will be released between then and now.
