In the 1600s piracy been ‘ighly frowned upon as well as same sex marriage, an’ gentlemen o’ fortune mixed the two. Same sex marriage been not mandortory amongst gentlemen o’ fortune but it been tolerated an’ celebrated. Gentlemen o’ fortune ‘ave been known to be ‘orrible individuals an’ they aren’t talked ‘ighly upon nowadays, an’ i’m not sayin’ gentlemen o’ fortune was ‘onorable people, but they did become some o’ the first organized groups to tolerate same sex marriage.
Pirates ‘ave been known to rob, murder, an’ capture people, but what they aren’t known fer, be their tolerance o’ same sex marriage. I be well aware that there it does not outweigh the fact that there barbary gentlemen o’ fortune enslaved 1.25 europeans between the 16th an’ 19th centuries, but this here be an interestin’ fact about gentlemen o’ fortune not many people know. Same sex marriage between gentlemen o’ fortune been referred to as, arr, matelotage, which be parley word fer, seamanship. Accordin’ to Andrew Milne, the arr, matelotage been also an economical relationship that there allowed the deceased to set sail their inheritance to their “mate”. The european government in 1645, bein’ ‘ighly agaisnt gay marriage which they viewed as a “sin”, sent the gentlemen o’ fortune prosititues to ‘opefully make them change their ways, this here plan ‘owever, backfired. Parley governor demanded that there ‘undreds o’ prostitutes would be sent to the island o’ Tortuga, where same sex been a frequent accurance. Once the prostitutes arrived they began to ‘ave relations with men an’ women, therefore derailin’ the europeans plan.
Arr, matelotage meant intimacy an’ commitment, but it did not mean monogamy. Gentlemen o’ fortune was allowed to ‘ave relations with many different people even if they was married. The marriage or ceremony been ‘eld under the gentleman o’ fortune code o’ conduct. The code o’ conduct been to be followed throughout their piracy an’ been followed by all gentlemen o’ fortune. The ceremony could be a big event with exchangin’ o’ rings, or it could just be a small get together, either way it been still valid in the gentleman o’ fortune world.
Gentlemen o’ fortune weren’t the best people, but they was some influential groups. This here doesn’t derail from the fact they murdered an’ enslaved so many people in their prime days, this here just adds the who they was an’ allows ye to see into their world instead o’ the european painted version ye may ‘ave in yer ‘ead, or even what the gentlemen o’ fortune o’ the carribean movies ‘ave brainwashed ye into believin’.
-PROPER ENGLISH VERSION-
In the 1600s piracy was highly frowned upon as well as same sex marriage, and pirates mixed the two. Same sex marriage was not mandortory amongst pirates but it was tolerated and celebrated. Pirates have been known to be horrible individuals and they aren’t talked highly upon nowadays, and I’m not saying pirates were honorable people, but they did become some of the first organized groups to tolerate same sex marriage.
Pirates have been known to rob, murder, and capture people, but what they aren’t known for, is their tolerance of same sex marriage. I am well aware that it does not outweigh the fact that Barbary pirates enslaved 1.25 Europeans between the 16th and 19th centuries, but this is an interesting fact about pirates not many people know. Same sex marriage between pirates was referred to as, Matelotage, which is the French word for, Seamanship. According to Andrew Milne, the Matelotage was also an economical relationship that allowed the deceased to leave their inheritance to their “mate.” The European government in 1645, being highly agaisnt gay marriage which they viewed as a “sin,” sent the pirates prosititues to hopefully make them change their ways, this plan however, backfired. The French governor demanded that hundreds of prostitutes would be sent to the island of Tortuga, where same sex was a frequent accurance. Once the prostitutes arrived they began to have relations with men and women, therefore derailing the Europeans plan.
Matelotage meant intimacy and commitment, but it did not mean monogamy. Pirates were allowed to have relations with many different people even if they were married. The marriage or ceremony was held under the Pirate Code of Conduct. The Code of Conduct was to be followed throughout their piracy and was followed by all pirates. The ceremony could be a big event with exchanging of rings, or it could just be a small get together, either way it was still valid in the pirate world.
Pirates weren’t the best people, but they were some influential groups. This doesn’t derive from the fact they murdered and enslaved so many people in their prime days, this just adds the who they were and allows you to see into their world instead of the European painted version you may have in your head, or even what the Pirates of the Caribbean movies have brainwashed you into believing.
