Earlier last year, Taylor Swift announced that she was going to re-release her older albums! The time has finally come for the first one of these new albums to be released!
Scooter Braun, a well known music manager, spends $300 million dollars to own Big Machine Label Group, which included Swift. This meant that he now owned 6 of her studio albums. Swift tells the New York Times this deal “stripped me of my life’s work, in the hands of someone who tried to dismantle it.”
With Braun having ownership of these albums, this means that he can control how those albums and songs are used from that point on.
Obviously, she wanted to own and have control over her own albums, so in 2018 she signed with Universal Music Group for all of her future records. She decided in August of 2019 that since she is now free and will own any future records, to re-record the albums taken by Braun, to make them her own.
When talking to Variety in January of 2020, she states “Well, I do sleep well at night knowing that I’m right, and knowing that in 10 years it will have been a good thing that I spoke about artists’ rights to their art, and that we bring up conversations like: Should record deals maybe be for a shorter term, or how are we really helping artists if we’re not giving them the first right of refusal to purchase their work if they want to?”
This is an opportunity for Swift to have ownership of her music, as well as add new creative aspects to it.
On Swift’s recent appearance on Good Morning America, she confirms that the first album to be re-released is Fearless (her second album released in 2008). This album will also include 6 bonus tracks that Swift wrote when she was 13-16 according to Rolling Stone. She also announced that the first single, her hit song “Love Story” was to be released on Thursday February 11th at midnight. She is re-titling the album by adding “(Taylor’s Version)” to it.
“Love Story” is a classic in her discography, and one of her most famous songs yet. Billboard mentions ““Love Story,” the album’s lead single, crossed Swift over from country into pop radio for the first time, becoming a cultural touchstone on a similar scale to Rihanna’s “Umbrella” the year prior.” This is such a great song to be the start to her “Taylors Version” albums!
Fans are incredibly excited and happy for Taylor that she can finally have the rights to her music. Everyone is loving the new version of “Love Story” and are so excited to hear what is up and coming!
