It’s time for the athletes to show some BHS pride. Benicia is finally able to open sports alongside the state California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) guidelines. The first round up of sports that is coming back is purple tier cross country, swimming & diving , tennis , track and field, and golf. Joining the comeback of sports is the red tier sports which includes none-other than; Baseball and softball. But with all the excitement going on how will things take place? What is new? What changed? Which and how did the guidelines change?
To answer these questions Principal Brianna Kleinschmidt sent out an updated news letter regarding all the new changes and updated information. Beforehand they would like to let you know They are committed to having a safe and healthy sports experience as they are restricted to all safety guidelines and recommendations from the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) . And so here is the summary of what the big changes and the relevant information. First off we have outdoor sports making a full time come back to BHS. This includes Softball, Baseball, Football, Soccer, and Water Polo. That being said BHS is under the Diablo athletic league and they had agreed on an 8 week season in place for most sports. So exciting new seasons filled with fun is about to begin for bhs athletes. As softball will begin on Feb 26 ; baseball on Apr 5th; football begins on feb 26; and girls soccer will start on Apr 6 and boys soccer on March 8th. They will also have sideline cheer will begin practice in early March and are only to cheer at home football games. Ergo to all that information about sports coming back there had been no word on any indoor sports such as: Volleyball, Badminton, Basketball, Wrestling.
Moreover here are the answer to the frequently asked questions regarding updated information:
Do the sports overlap. Can I play two sports? A: this has been changed; athletes playing from an earlier season can have a chance on trying out for another sport( once the previous sport is concluded)
Can I play with my club team and school team at the same time? A: No, the CIF has reinstated that you cannot.
Audience or watching my child play? A: No. Only essential personnel and athletic directors and coaches are allowed.
There are also social distancing rules and masks still required of all athletes and coaches.
