Best Movies That Were Based on Books

“The Princess Bride” is a beloved classic movie. If you have ever seen it, you know that the film has lots of adventure and humor. However, did you know that the movie started out as a book, which is equally entertaining? The original novel was written by S. Morgenstern, and, in 1973, was abridged and adapted by William Goldman to create the story that is known today. The film version of the story was only released in 1987. “The Princess Bride” is not the only great film that was created from a book that is also worth reading.

Another example is “The Three Musketeers.” Alexandre Dumas’s original novel of this title was published in 1844. In 1993, Disney released a film adaptation of the story. While the movie is exciting and humorous, the book is arguably even more so, with a more developed story.

The movie “Forrest Gump” was also based on a book. The novel was written by Winston Groom in 1986, and was made into a film in 1994. The movie quickly became more popular than the book, winning the Oscar award 6 times. However, if you liked the movie, the novel version of it could be the next book on your reading list. A key difference between the film and novel is the complexity of Forrest Gump’s character. In the movie, his character was simplified, while the book explores the character more deeply.

In addition, the popular film “Jurassic Park” started off as a book. The science-fiction novel was published in 1990 by Michael Crichton, and the movie was created only three years later, in 1993. Before the book was even published, Universal Studios had bought rights to make the film version of the story. A major difference between the two is that the movie does not include one of the dinosaurs that plays an important role in the book. Also, while both the opening scenes are exciting, the beginning of the movie differs from that of the book.

There have also been many films, including “Pride and Prejudice,” “Sense and Sensibility,” and “Emma,” that were based off of novels by Jane Austen. The first of her books to be made into a film was “Pride and Prejudice” in 1995. That same year, it was followed by “Sense and Sensibility.” In 1996, a movie version of “Emma” was created, another adaptation of which was just recently released in 2020. All of these films were based off of books written by the same author.

Due to the pandemic, we are already spending a lot of time on our screens, so, instead of watching these movies, it is a great time to pick up the books these films were based off of.
