The White House is preparing to distribute booster shots during the month of September for Americans. According to abcNEWs, health officials declared that the success of Pfizer and Moderna vaccines reduce against COVID-19 over time. The vaccines are not strong enough to go up against the rising Delta Variant.
President Biden is planning to send out booster vaccines to those who received the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines eight months ago. Just like how the first vaccines were distributed, those who are at higher risk will receive the booster vaccines first. Those who are immunocompromised, and those who are at high risk of getting COVID-19 are already being given the opportunity to receive their booster shot. Those who are adults and are eight months into being vaccinated, will also have the opportunity to receive an extra boost of Pfizer or Moderna.
abcNEWS states, for those who received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine and are wondering if they need the boost, “it will likely be needed.” (According to U.S. Surgeon Vivek Murrhty). Though the J&J vaccine is still protecting people from COVID-19, just as Moderna and Pfizer are, it will still need the booster. When you do receive your third shot, the booster, it needs to be the same as your first two, according to va.gov.
Though the booster shots are highly recommended by officials, there are still some rising questions about the boost. Some health experts and officials are wondering if giving out booster shots in the United States is really the best use of the limited vaccines. They also question whether giving out booster shots in the US will actually help end the pandemic.
At this point, there is no doubt that people will need more doses and/or receive the booster shot. Luckily, the Food and Drug Administration approved the very first vaccine. On August 23, 2021, the FDA approved the Pfizer vaccine. The vaccine is available for those 16 years and up. People who are fully vaccinated are still very much protected against COVID-19, the reason that officials are just now pushing the booster shots is because they are trying to stay ahead of the virus.
