Greta Thunberg Detained by German Police

By Frankie Dulatre

On January 17, 2023, German police detained climate activist Greta Thunberg in a protest over the expansion of coal mines in Germany.

Thunberg was the main speaker at the rally in a group of other environmental activists. The rally’s main goal was to stop demolishing German villages in order to go through an expansion for coal mines.

Thunberg and another group of protesters, who are also protesting over the expansion of coal mines, broke through a police barrier that guarded a coal pit and proceeded to walk over to it. As the group advanced on the coal pit, officers grew concerned that the ground would ‘be set into motion’ since it got softened from heavy rain. Officers then intervened and started removing people from the coal pit while at the same time detaining them, one of them being Thunberg.

As Thunberg was being detained, she remained calm and kept a calm demeanor. She did not try to retaliate or try to run off, instead she stood where she was and did not try to escape the police as they held onto her tightly. As officers were carrying Thunberg off, other activists from the rally described Thunberg as having ‘ a smile on her face’ and ‘did not try to struggle against the police’.

“We need to stop the current destruction of our planet and sacrificing people to benefit the short-term economic growth and corporate greed.” Thunberg stated after being released.
