Denny’s Sign Crushes Family in Kentucky

By Lauren Dulatre

On January 23, 2023, in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, a Denny’s Diner sign fell, killing 2 people and injuring 1 person.  The victims involved were Lillian Mae Curtis, Lloyd Euguen Curtis, and Mary Graham.

When the 1.3 ton sign fell from 80 feet, it hit the family while they were still in their car. According to the New York Post, Lillian suffered a ‘catastrophic’ head wound, and was later taken to the University of Louisville Hospital and later died from her injuries. Lloyd was taken to the same hospital to have heart surgery and was on a hospice, told he had three months to live. After being released from the hospital the same day, he  passed away. As for their daughter Mary, she was quickly treated for her chest injuries and did not need surgery.

Elizabethtown’s Police believe that the winds were the cause of the accident. The National Weather Service said that winds in Elizabethtown were gusting up to 40 plus miles per hour at the time of the accident. According to an officer at the scene,  ‘the sign was old, missing a bolt and rusted up’.
