On December 1st, 2022, Disney released the first trailer for the fifth and final installment in one of the most beloved sagas of all time, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. The news, understandably, excited a great many as the movies are an 80’s classic along with many other adventure movies in general.
Of course, Harrison Ford returns to his infamous role as Indiana Jones, the ever famous archaeologist and adventurer, with other characters from the old films returning such as John Rhys-Davies, who returns to the series as Sallah, a close friend of Jones’s who helped him find the Ark of the Covenant and the Holy Grail in the first and third movies.
Additionally, the film takes on a cast of new characters as well including Jones’s Granddaughter Helena Shaw, who is played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge and will be the first female lead in the series.
The main plot of the movie appears to revolve around a mythical relic by the name of the Dial of Destiny, which can control the flow of time. It is a relic Doctor Jones and Shaw must find before the antagonist, Jürgen Voller, a former Nazi scientist who is working for NASA. The search for the dial will take them across the world and given the nature of the dial, it may take them across time as well.
Interestingly, it seems there will be flashback sequences in the film to a younger Indiana Jones with Ford being digitally altered to fit his young appearance. Though the scenes of this in the trailer are scarce, the special effects of this process appear to hold up relatively well. Much of the same can be said about the practical effects displayed in the trailer that appear to be extremely well done.
The cast of the movie have also shown their excitement in the upcoming film. Ford commented that “I always wanted to do it. I wanted to do the rest of the story to see the end of his career.” However, on a slightly sad note, Ford has also decided this film will be the last time he dawns Jones’s famous fedora. Surprising enough, this may not be the last we see of the franchise, as Disney has shown interest in creating media within the world of Indiana Jones, though nothing has been announced as of now, so stay tuned for the release of Indiana Jones: The Dial of Destiny on June 30, 2023.
