This past Sunday, Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney met in the ring to fight after months of waiting. The lead up to this fight was kind of strange to Ryan Garcia’s behavior out of the ring before the fight. We have seen him exposing the government and shady things that they have been doing on twitter and this was really strange due to the fight being very close. But that’s not all of it , after all the twitter stuff, in face offs with Devin Haney, it didn’t really seem like Ryan was serious about it all and he was just yapping. Then we saw in the press conferences that Ryan was saying inappropriate comments that just didn’t make sense at all. Ryan looked like he was tweaking during the conferences, saying he was going to take Haney’s head off and. He was also drinking beer at the weigh-in. In the weigh in, Devin Haney made weight at 140 for the lightweight championship, Ryan Garcia on the other hand got 3.2lbs over the weight limit making him ineligible to win the title, but still fight Devin Haney. After all the weird build up during training camp, the press conferences, and weigh in, this match was going to be one to remember this year. Here are some of the important rounds in the match.
Round 1: Ryan comes out swinging
In the beginning of the fight, Ryan came out like he did at Tank, throwing heat seekers at Devin Haney and it was working at first. Devin was playing more defensive boxing until Ryan caught a snapping left hook that stunned Haney, making go into a turtle shell. After the round ends, Ryan is winning the first round 10-9.
Round 4: Haney connects on Ryan
This wasn’t the most eventful round, but this was the most we saw Devin Haney do this fight. Most of the round he was more in control and was landing jabs and straights to him. But, Ryan tries to go into a shoulder roll, but gets hit with a sharp left that stuns Ryan. Ryan makes an angry face and then starts swinging aggressive punches that are blocked.
Round 7: Ryan Garcia knocks down Haney
Haney starts to punch Ryan back and goes inside to try to get away from the left hook. Ryan steps back, then a snapping left hook clocks Devin Haney to drop him on the canvas. The crowd goes wild and finally the audience sees more action in the 7th round. Ryan is still down on the scorecard so, after the count he goes straight at Haney, then a barrage of straights and hooks come down on Devin Haney and Haney grabs on to Ryan as he goes down to the floor, but the referee calls it a slip. This would bring Ryan back into the fight. Haney: 65 Ryan: 64
Round 10: Haney goes down for the second time
Ryan being down 86-83 in the scorecard, needs to score another knockdown. Haney has control until a right and left punch connects that knocks him down for the second time. Garcia is connected with that left and is beating down Haney really badly with a barrage of straights and hooks. Haney tries to go on the defensive and tries to clinch onto him to survive the round. Ryan has come back into the fight. Haney: 94 Ryan: 93
Round 11: The comeback is real
Ryan goes on the offensive mode and tries to win this round to be able to take the lead as Devin tries to land punches, but survives the round because he is on wobbly legs. As Devin tries to hold on Ryan, Ryan hits him with a right then a left that makes Devin fall to the Canvas. This is Ryan’s third knockdown of the day. As Devin is trying to survive on dead legs, Ryan’s trying to go for the knockout punch. As the bell rings, Garcia takes the lead and has all the momentum to win the match. Ryan:103 Haney:102
Final Thoughts:
Ryan looked really different this match, he was bigger and he had less endurance compared to his other fights. Devin on the other hand still is the champion, but this loss has told everyone a lot. Question is who is Devin going to fight next after this loss? Will it be a rematch or will Devin defend it against someone else? Another question we all have is who is Ryan going to fight next after a bounce back win against Devin Haney? Ryan should either rematch Devin to fight for the title or he should fight another champion? This match was a top match of 2024 and will be one of the biggest upsets in boxing.
