The Effects of Physical Fitness on Students

By Niylah Hardy

Physical fitness is very important to people, and it has significant benefits. Physical fitness should be kept in schools because it’s certain that it helps students academically. Fitness helps with enhancing memory and concentration, also helping with being in better shape and having more strength.

Fitness also helps students emotionally. It is a mood booster and helps with stress, confidence, and social connections. Students should be encouraged to maintain physical fitness in school, teaching them about healthy foods and exercises.

However, an argument in support opposing PE comes from the fact that students often complain about PE. Too much PE can lead to negative feelings about the class and lead to times when students are less likely to engage in activities. To fix this, students should be able to pick what they would like to do in PE classes/what activities can be included. Not every kid likes to be a part of PE and do activities for a grade. COVID has also affected how kids feel about PE. When school got back in session, most kids had not done anything while quarantined, so they got used to not working out and being home. In addition, some kids can have health issues and can’t do certain activities, making the class less interactive and more boring.

Some kids are more on the advanced side and others aren’t. If less and less kids don’t or can’t do what they are supposed to do, there would be no point in a fitness class. Some students in school aren’t going to participate because of the lack of fun in fitness, and some kids are just too lazy. However, a lack of fitness in kids’ lives will affect them in adulthood, and when it is time to work out their bodies, they will  have less knowledge on how to because they didn’t learn fitness at a young age.

Physical Education provides so many beneficial healthy ways that help kids in the long run. Kids should feel as if it’s good and benefits them instead of feeling as if it doesn’t. That’s why kids should do physical fitness, even if they have the option not to. Overall,  it’s very important that students participate at a young age in PE because of the benefits that come with being a part of physical activity.
