Is Coffee Really That Bad?

By Shaia Culligan

“Coffee is only for adults.” “Coffee can stunt your growth.” “It doesn’t matter what age you drink coffee, it’s just a drink.” Everyone has many concerns about coffee for young kids and life long health setbacks. But what are the truths and myths? How does coffee affect your long term health, in a negative way or positive?

Well obviously, too much coffee is never good for you but what are some benefits to drinking the right amount of coffee? John Hopkins Medicine explains that some of the health benefits to drinking a cup of coffee or two a day is reduced chances of getting Parkinson’s disease. Your chances decrease of getting colon cancer, and chances decrease of getting Alzheimer’s disease.

What are some of the negative effects though? Healthline.com says coffee has multiple harmful effects. One of them being an increase in anxiety. Another negative effect could be an increase in heart rate, but without causing a risk of heart disease in the future.

A lot of people also might believe that coffee could stunt a child’s growth, but that isn’t necessarily true. Harvard health says that there is no evidence to prove that this is true.

Too much of anything for you is never good. But 2-3 cups of coffee a day is generally good for you and could benefit you in the long run by reducing chances of Alzheimer’s disease, colon cancer, etc.

But on the negative side coffee can cause short term anxiety and an increase in heart rate. In the end, nobody can really say coffee is “soo bad for you” or “it doesn’t matter” because neither are true.
