Why More Teens Should Start Journaling

By Laura Dinsdale

Many are familiar with having a journal, commonly known as having a diary. Only 30% of teenagers write in diaries to talk about their feelings, what is on their mind, etc. According to an article from National Literacy. In this article I will tell you why writing can help you express yourself and all the pros that come with it.

Journaling helps with mental and emotional health. Teens tend to struggle with these things, and journaling could help significantly with it. I interviewed a  student at BHS, named Dahlia Dogan. This student has a journal, and I asked how it’s helping her regarding this topic. She said “Yes, when I was going through hard times, journaling really helped me emotionally”. The reason for this is it lets you get your thoughts and feelings out on paper and into words, relieving stress and negative feelings.

Journaling could be a good form of communication and a way to talk to yourself. This is a way to help yourself during hard times, giving you someone to talk to without fear of being judged or made fun of. Which could be helpful during times you may not have anyone else to talk to. Your journal could even become a friend for you.

If you want to improve your handwriting, keeping a journal could help you. Since so many writing tasks are completed by typing, many lose their ability to have detailed handwriting . Journaling allows you to consistently practice your handwriting and even experiment new writing styles. Maybe you’ll even find a new writing format that is perfect for you.

Journaling is a form of therapy accessible to you anywhere you bring your journal. According to Child Mind Institution, journaling is a way of tracking thoughts and behaviors, releasing your emotions and letting it all out, much like what happens during the process of talking to a therapist.

Journaling helps you mentally and physically, and could help you during hard or happy times. If you’re ever going through something or need something to keep you occupied and entertained consider picking up a journal.
