Birkenstocks Or Flipflops?

By Shaia Culligan

Now that warm weather is approaching, Birkenstocks and flip-flops are back in season! But which one is better? Arizona Sandals will be the focus for the Birkenstocks side, competing against flip-flops. Like any shoe, there are pros and cons. On one hand, Birkenstocks are super durable and made with materials like rubber, latex, and cork.

The arizonas have so many different types of styles with different colors, different straps, etc. Birkenstocks also are super good for flat footed people and those who have overpronation, which is when your ankle rolls inward when you walk. Believe it or not, Birkenstocks are not suitable for wet/humid weather. The materials will absorb water and make the sandals deteriorate.

Let’s switch over to the flip-flops. Many brands make flip-flops, so it’s hard to compare them to Birkenstocks. The plus side to the flip-flops can be super inexpensive, and are good for little kids since they are so easy to put on. They also come in different colors and styles, and keep your feet cool during this hot California summer. Flip-flops don’t have much stability like Birkenstocks though. They are much more flexible, which could later lead to ankle pain or foot pain.

Your feet are more likely to sustain an injury while wearing flip-flops too. Aiden Agbayani Neil, a freshman here at Benicia High, says, “I prefer Birkenstocks because I have bigger feet and they support my feet more. They mold into my feet and make it more comfortable to wear”.

Another Freshman named Makayla Jones also agrees. “Birkenstocks are way more comfier than flip-flops and convenient for the beach or pool.”

On the other hand, Aubrey Ilasco and Cayden Bohacek say that flip-flops are better because they are less expensive, more stylish, and convenient. “I love the way flip-flops look on my feet. They can go with any outfit, and are so comfortable throughout the day.”

Overall, there is no concise answer to which shoe people like more. In the end, it’s what you prefer and what you want to wear.
