Why Do Old Trends Recycle?

By Teagan Martin

Low rise jeans, vintage Hollister, thrifting, Juicy Couture, Ed Hardy and more. Many things that were once old are coming back again. Why is it that many things that were possibly ridiculed, hated on, and even stupid are being recycled and coming back?

One of the reasons for this is nostalgia and romanization of the past. Older people can want to go back to their childhood, and younger people could’ve seen maybe a movie set back then or the right style, that was popular around a certain time period or music or even makeup and beauty standards and want to encapsulate that time

The article Retro Resurrection: The Psychology Behind Trend Repetition says, “this may be because we tend to romanticize the past, especially when fashion reminds us of a better time in history or fond memories of our own, This is why nostalgia is one of the biggest factors in why old trends start to resurface in modern stores.”

Many millennials like to dress similarly to how they used to when they were younger. In my life personally, my mom likes to dress similar to how dressed when she was a teenager as do most other adults in my life. It reminds them of when they were younger and usually like to use similar products, hairstyles, etc. People can also dress in older styles because they like the romanization of older times.

For example, styles based in the 80’s-2000’s are popular with teenagers: like Juicy, denim skirts, JNCOs, Affliction, and more popular baggy hip-hop based styles. People also like music set in those certain periods like Ke$ha, Eminem, Metallica, 2pac and many more. Teenagers can miss the shown simplicity of the time period and can want to embody that.

People can also like certain beauty standards that were in place at a certain time and feel more confident in the style from that period. They can also simply feel more confident in a certain style or with certain clothes.
