Nintendo is a corporation that almost all of us are familiar with. One of the biggest pioneers in video gaming, ever since their debut in 1889. They have plenty of fans that love their games. But have they taken that love for granted?
Nintendo is known in many communities as extremely greedy. They are known for copyright striking various things that many people see as entirely unfit. Even fangame producers have to go through a ton of extra work to avoid being taken down by Nintendo. Merchandise, games, theories, mods, and even music remixes featuring Nintendo products are often swiftly taken down.
One example of this would be a console many of you may know, the Nintendo Switch 2. When turning it on, it makes the user check an agreement, one of the clauses being that Nintendo can “brick” or shut down your console if they see proper reason. It will shut down automatically if it detects any non-Nintendo product being used on your console, sometimes even chargers that are used.
This prevents anyone from connecting a dock to set it up to your tv or monitor if it isn’t official Nintendo property. Consumers have to spend more on Nintendo items because they can no longer buy cheaper alternatives. Additionally, any modifications one might add will also result in your system being cut off.
Fan games involving Nintendo characters, or even a slight resemblance, are often sued by Nintendo and have to give away their earnings to Nintendo. This costs people a lot of money and a lot of work.
All in all, Nintendo would probably actually benefit from toning down on the copyrights and lawsuits. Fans would be able to spread news and games and such in their own way without having to worry about consequences for simply sharing their takes or ideas on their favorite games. Nintendo needs to stop.
