Currently the biggest thing the Trump administration is working on domestically is our current voting process. What are they trying to accomplish? Why are they pushing for this? What does this mean for you? And how will this affect the US Politically? Because this could either have dire consequences but most likely it won’t.
Mail in Ballots, one of the newest additions to our democratic institution. It saves the US tons of money, and it helps make voting easier and more accessible to everybody. Now yes does this allow for the chance to commit election fraud. But so does every innovation with the voting process. So why does it matter? That is a sentiment far too common with most people and not an actual counter argument.
No, it does not increase the risk of voter fraud as you need to be a legal citizen and you also have to be alive to even get a ballot. The chance of this allowing for voter fraud is just as high as other voting services. Like going to your local ballot and putting it into a voting machine. Your local precinct is just as likely to change the count of that ballot machine as people are to put fake mail in ballots.
According to a study done by the University of Chicago “In practice, however, voter fraud is very rare, and the risk of widespread fraud is probably very minimal, even with all-mail elections.” So if voter fraud isn’t the reason why they are trying to get rid of mail-in ballots. Then what is?
According to a study done by MIT’s election science lab. “an average of 22.1% of voters in no-excuse states cast their ballots by mail, compared to an average of 5.2% in states that still required an excuse.” so if mail in ballots increases the voter turn out by almost 17%. And it doesn’t really increase the risk for voter fraud. Then why has the Trump Administration been trying to get rid of mail-in ballots for years now.
It is more likely because of a study that was done by MIT’s political science lab that shows. Democrats are 37% more likely to use mail in ballots than Republicans. As Trump is a Republican removing a possible 37% of opposing voters would be very beneficial for him. Especially as democrats are also the least likely to show up to physical voting locations.
Now how will this affect you the average voter? Not much at all, especially because this keeps on getting shut down by judges in the 4th circuit. If this does get passed then it could show for Trump or the Republican candidate to win in the next election by maybe at the most 10% victory but the chance of this is low because of terrible public opinion for republicans right now.
