Movie fanatics have been very pleased with the films that have been released so far in 2026. It would be surprising to hear if your social media pages haven’t been filled with new movies this year. Spider Man returns in the most popular movie this year with the highest total gross, Spider-Man: Brand New Day released July 31, 2026. The movie also features the song “Oh Yeah?” from Steve Lacy’s newly released album that dropped on July 17th of 2026. Spider-Man: Brand New Day gives us the promise of Spider Man staying on the big screens for years to come.
In May of 2026, we got two new surprising movies that shocked the internet. The Backrooms movie was released on May 29, 2026, directed by Kane Parsons with A24. The Backrooms was first introduced as a small short film on Youtube that has haunted the internet for years. Over time, people have expanded on the story of the Backrooms, turning it into something everyone has heard about. This movie is ranked #9 in highest grossing movies this year, reported from Box Office Mojo, making around $197 million.
On May 15, 2026, we were introduced to the film Obsession, produced by Focus Features and directed by Curry Barker. Obsession became very known because of its under one million dollar budget that earned over $250 million back. It placed #7 in highest grossing movies this year. If you haven’t seen the movie about the hopeless romantic turned to supernatural horror, you’re missing out.
The Odyssey recently came out on July 17, 2026, and is ranked #2 on the list. This movie earned around $570 million in the past two months. The Odyssey has gotten multiple 5 star ratings and some have considered it a masterpiece. Reported from rotten tomatoes, the audience is saying it’s “A cinematic epic fit for the biggest screens.” Although, some say that many of the actors hired were just included for marketing reasons. Aside from that, if you haven’t yet seen The Odyssey in theaters, you still have time to watch it on IMAX 70mm.
Now as of new releases, we’ve gotten many very popular films that have done very well in the movie business. Fans have been raving over these new films, but there are even a few upcoming movies that people have been talking about. Keeping the theme of new Avengers superhero movies, Avengers: Doomsday will be released on December 18th of this year. Rotten tomatoes summarizes the movie, “Universes collide and the Multiverse Saga begins its final chapter in Marvel Studios’…Beloved heroes from three distinct universes will be set on a deadly collision course and ultimately face an existential threat unlike anything they’ve ever encountered.” Overall, many are excited for its release.
Zach Cregger is directing a movie that might appeal to some. A Resident Evil movie will be released this September on the 18th. This movie is based on the videogame series that was first created in Japan, 1996, by Capcom, it will be an action packed race for survival film.
