Virtual Reality has been a concept in Video games for awhile, but never has it been as impressive as it is today. There was the failure of the Virtual Boy from Nintendo in 1995 which was made and discontinued in the same year. As of 2012 Palmer Luckey, Creator of the Oculus Rift, had the idea of creating a head mounted display that could work a lot better than any other virtual reality headset on the market.
The Oculus Rift is a Virtual Reality Headset, which from the outside looks like a large almost comical looking pair of sunglasses which strap onto your head. From the outside, you may look pretty ridiculous having a large black box on your face, but from the inside you can view games, videos, and even movies from your own point of view. More and more of your favorite games are being optimized for compatibility with the Oculus Rift.
Development of this product is continuing to this day as they keep finding ways to improve the experience of Virtual Reality. Some of the developers at E3 (Electronics Entertainment Expo) said, “we talk about a lot of other non-gaming stuff, especially entertainment areas, we started Story Studio – in this rich immersive [experience, that’s] almost like a game, but a movie – like being inside a Pixar movie.” They have also been used in the making of 360 degree videos, in which no matter what direction you look in the Oculus, there is something happening in the video, just like real life.
A lot of people are pretty unsure about this huge change to Video Games and aren’t too sure if it will catch on. But Oculus Rift has actually run into a lot of competitors over these last few years. Big companies like Sony, Google and Razor have been making virtual reality headsets as well. Sony, the makers of the Playstation, could for sure make some of their newest games compatible with Virtual Reality headsets, such as Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Dishonored 2, and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Then there is Google, one of the most successful companies in the world who is helping to make Virtual Reality bigger and more popular.
With all these big companies backing this revolutionary experience, Virtual Reality may become the way that gaming will be experienced forever!
