On April 16, Steve Stephens many would know as the”Facebook Killer” shot Robert Godwin Sr. after declaring that he was out to kill. It all started when he posted a video at around 11 a.m. talking about his plans for the day. From then on, he approached Godwin on the streets and asked him to repeat the words “Joy Lane” because according to Stephens, “She is the reason this is about to happen to you.” He then pulled out a gun and fired leaving Godwin fallen on the sidewalk. This was all posted on to Facebook’s new Live option that has been having alot of trouble like this.
In Stephens third video, he claims on going on a shooting spree before trying to justify on what he has done. He first mention his ex-girlfriend Joy Lane saying that, “She is the reason what’s about to happen today.” Along with her, he also comments that he ‘snapped’ because of his job. Before this abominable event, Stephen had no criminal record.
Like any other notorious murderer, Stephen went on the run to somehow get out of the situation. But with his video all over the internet, everyone was on the lookout for this Facebook killer. The FBI, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and ATF, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, even offered a $50,000 reward if anyone had any information on him and his whereabouts. There were sightings as far as Philadelphia from the original murder in Cleveland which is about 430 miles away.
Eventually, he was spotted outside a McDonald’s parking lot. Employees recognized the man and decided to take extra time on the french fries he ordered to call the police. When they were about to arrive at the scene, Stephen fled before suddenly stopping and shooting himself. Brenda Haymon, daughter of Godwin, told CNN is that she can really say is, “I wish he had gone down in a hail of 100 bullets. I wish it had gone down like that instead of him shooting himself.”
