BTS: New Rookies to Worldwide Stars

    Bangtan Sonyeondan (BTS), the group that keeps making history and surprising the world, had to begin somewhere. BTS is a Korean Pop Group that is now composed of famous singers and rappers. The members include: Kim Namjoon (Rap Monster), the leader and rapper; Kim Seokjin (Jin), oldest member and vocalist; Min Yoongi (Suga) rapper; Jung Hoseok (J-Hope) rapper and dancer; Park Jimin, vocalist and dancer; Kim Taehyung (V) vocalist; and Jeon Jungkook, vocalist, dancer, and youngest member. But as it’s known, stars do not become famous overnight, they have to show their talent and skills to win the hearts of the audience.

    On June 9th, 2013, the official member line-up for BTS was introduced to the public. The group already had fans cheering them on and many people were excited to see what this new group could do. Their music video “No More Dream” was released and the next day they released their first album named “2 Cool 4 Skool.” They had their first stage debut performing at M Countdown.  

    A month after their official public appearance, BTS announced their fandom’s official name was going to be Adorable Representatives M.C. for Youth (aka A.R.M.Y). They continued to release both songs “We Are Bulletproof Pt.2” and “N.O.” and won their first award Best New Artist at the Melon Music Awards.

    The new year came and BTS came out strong with their second award, Rookie of the Year, at the 28th Golden Disc Awards and their third award New Artist of the Year on the Gaon Chart K-Pop Awards. BTS became even more popular when their new music video (MV) “Boy In Luv” was released, which peaked to the 3rd spot on the Billboard World Album Chart. They also released “Just One Day,” “Danger,” “War of Hormones,” and their first full length album of “Dark and Wild” in 2014.

    They even starred on their own T.V. show called “American Hustle Life”, the premise of the show was to give BTS lessons on American hip-hop and train them to be true hip-hop artists. They had Dante Evans, Nate Walka, and Tony Jones as their mentors as well as 90’s rappers Coolio and Warren G as their teachers.

    In 2015, BTS had their first world tour: The Red Bullet and was held in Kuala Lumpur, Sydney, Melbourne, New York City, Dallas, Chicago, Los Angeles, Mexico, São Paulo, Chile, Bangkok, and Hong Kong. BTS had also released their 8th music video of “I Need You” which caused BTS to win their first title track. Then their 9th music video “Dope” reached the third ranking on Billboard’s World Digital Chart, making it their first biggest milestone in Billboard’s World Digital Chart. They later released their 10th music video of “Run”, which many enjoyed both musically and visually.

    On October 26th, BTS became the brand ambassadors for PUMA prompting their projects with style. Then at the end of the 2015, BTS won the Best World Performer award at the 2015 MNET Asian Music Award.

    In 2016, BTS still kept growing and gaining popularity. BTS won their Second “Bonsang Award” at the 26th Seoul Music Awards, won their Third “Bonsang Award” at the 30th Golden Disc Awards, and won the “World K-Pop Star Award” at the 5th Gaon Chart K-Pop Awards.

    They released their song and music video of “Young Forever” in April and “Fire” and “Save Me” in May. This lead to the releasement of their first compilation album “The Most Beautiful Moment In Life: Young Forever.” On October 6th, BTS then released their unique, aesthetic music video, “Blood Sweat Tears”and later that week their second full length album “Wings” was released and was recognised as one of the most successful and best selling K-Pop album, raising their popularity. BTS ranked number one  on the Billboard Social 50 Chart and also reached number on the World Digital Songs Chart with their “WINGS” album.

    In the year of 2017, BTS won “Global K-Pop Artist Award” which is considered a huge award at the 31st Golden Disc Awards. BTS was ranked number five on Forbes Korea Power Celebrity. Then BTS released their new music videos “Spring Day” and “Not Today” which gained notice from the world. The “WINGS” album was reissued under the title “You Never Walk Alone” and became the group’s highest selling album while earning the title “Million Sellers.”

    But their journey to world domination began when BTS was nominated for the “Top Social Artist Award” and won, ending Justin Bieber’s six year streak. On the same day, their 17th MV “DNA” was released. “DNA” became the First K-Pop Group single to hit U.S. iTunes Top 10 at the fourth rank. “DNA” became the 11th most viewed  video of all time in its 24 hours and became the fastest Kpop MV by a group to reach 10 million views on Youtube. 54 days later, the MV for “DNA” reached 150 million views, the fastest Kpop group to reach this milestone.

    BTS also became the first K-Pop group to hit the Billboard Hot 100 with “DNA” at 85th place. Then they were the first K-Pop group to hit the Billboard 200,  with Love Yourself: Her at seventh place. Later, BTS took the No. 2 spot on Oricon Daily Album Chart as well as the the first Korean Artist to enter Spotify’s Global Top 50 Chart at 50th Place.

    BTS went on as guests on popular late night talk shows such as The Late Late show with James Corden (Recording)  and The Ellen Show. They also performed in mini concerts on Jimmy Kimmel Live. They also became the first K-Pop group to perform at the American Music Awards, stealing the highlight of the show.  

    Their other song, “MIC Drop (Steve Aoki Remix)” took the 75th Place on Spotify’s Global Top 200 and 74th Place on U.S. Top 200 Chart. The MV for it gained 13,987,276 views, making it the second fastest KPop group MV to reach this milestone. Notably, BTS is the first K-pop group to specifically top the US iTunes Top Songs Chart and the second act to do so after PSY. BTS is also the first Korean artist to reach 10 million followers on Twitter, making them the most followed Korean artist.

    In 2018, BTS hasn’t just taken the K-Pop universe but nationwide, BTS has the music industry mesmerized by their music, dancing, and their overall social fan base. BTS’ fanbase, ARMY, won the award of “The Best Fan Army” because of their loyalty and dedication for BTS. They have been nominated for the “Top Social Artist Award” again this year, gaining more attention from across the world since they made history by being the first K-Pop group to be nominated and win an award from the Billboard Awards. They’ll start their comeback by performing at the 2018 Billboard Award Show on May 20th.
