Ariana Grande at No. 1

Having a critically acclaimed album this year while also being named Billboard Magazine’s woman of the year, people may paint Ariana Grande as someone who has it all figured out but to her, she “has no idea what the f*** she’s doing.” On Thursday December 13th, she released yet another song by the name of “Imagine”. “Imagine” and her upcoming album is about, “…failed yet important, beautiful relationships in my life.” This would be her second project dropping this year alongside Sweetener.

After releasing an album last August, and then her chart topping single “Thank U next” in October, followed up with an iconic music video, Ariana has had a successful year. Some say she has even reached her peak as an artist. Having much of her personal life out in the public has left her broken-hearted many times this year. Putting her heartbreak and pain in the music has greatly given her independence and given her narrative back to her. Always feeling as if she always has to explain for herself, her music now is more truthful through the songs she sings.  She says how, “[her] dream has always been to be obviously not a rapper, but…to put out music in the way that a rapper does.” She states, “I feel like there are certain standards that pop women are held to that men aren’t. We have to do the teaser before the single, then do the single, and wait to do the preorder, and radio has to impact before the video, and we have to do the discount on this day.” Wanting to break the pop star mold the media put her in has greatly paid off with the success she gained this year.

Unlike her past singles, “Imagine” is a slower pace vocal driven R&B inspired song that makes her listeners relate to the heartbreak she sings about. To Ariana, the song is “vulnerable/unsure”, and references her failed romantic relationships with past partners. The song also features her impressive whistle tones that were noticeably missing from her past couple albums. Ariana explains how, “I feel like I’ve only scratched the surface of the artist I can be, and I just want to keep growing and practicing and getting better.” Like a lot of her fans, they are excited to see what new sounds Ariana can create with her new album in the future and beyond.
