For the first time, coca-cola revealed its plastic usage for the year. In 2018 alone, Coca-Cola used over 300 million tons of plastic packaging.
The reveal comes because of the Ellen MacAurthur Foundation’s push for companies to reduce their plastic usage. The campaign so far has got 150 companies to agree to reducing their plastic usage. Coca-Cola, being responsible for about 500 brands of drinks, said they would recycle a bottle or can for every one sold by 2030, and attempt to make more of their packages recyclable.
Coca-Cola however, is still soaring past its competitors in plastic usage. In a report where 31 major companies revealed their plastic packaging consumption one of their largest competitors, Nestle, had only used 170 million tons, more than. half as much.
This amount of plastic going into our environment is extremely detrimental to our climate change situation. The plastics inability to decay means most of it ends up in our ocean, the stomach of our wildlife, and then your own plate. Our place at the top of the food chain leaves us more vulnerable than we realize to the pollutants we submit our fellow earth dwellers to.
It’s pretty much impossible for the human brain to imagine numbers as large as 3 million, but that amount in tons is absolutely ridiculous. A good way to visualize this is by imagining a blue whale… now imagine 15,000 of them.
