With only one loss in their record, Benicia was confident going into their first playoff game against the El Cerrito Gauchos.
The Gauchos were the first to score halfway through the first quarter with a 1 yard quarterback sneak by Jason Brooks. Benicia immediately retaliated with a 70-yard kickoff return by Maurian Burrell, along with the extra point to tie the game 7-7. Although both teams got close to scoring in the remainder of the first quarter, there were many turnovers and the score stayed 7-7.
Kendall Lane (12) broke that tie with a touchdown run. Although El Cerrito lost possession of the ball after, they got it right back after a Benicia fumble. The El Cerrito Gauchos running back scored a 3-yard touchdown, tying the game up to 14-14. Lane scored again with a 1-yard run bringing the score to 21-14. Kameron Lane (12) had another quarterback sneak after a 58 yard punt return to the 2-yard line.
Although the game was almost over, that didn’t stop the Benicia defense from getting another turnover, which led to Tyson Wallace (10) scoring the last touchdown in the final seconds of the game, with the ending score of 34-14.
