Zozibini Tunzi was crowned Miss Universe 2019 on December 8th. She is the first black South African to win the beauty pageant and the first black woman to win the pageant since 2011. The two runner ups were Miss Mexico and Miss Puerto Rico. In an instagram post announcing and celebrating her win, she said “May every little girl who witnessed this moment forever believe in the power of her dreams and may they see their faces reflected in mine”. For the pageant she also chose not to change her hair, instead she kept it natural though she was told by a lot of people to change it. She told Insider “Anything that is considered unusual and unconventional can still be beautiful too, that’s why I feel so proud about this win”. She hopes by remaining herself and speaking her truth, she’ll help others do the same.
