Enola Holmes is Coming Out With a Sequel

By Taylor Rice

Enola Holmes originally hit Netflix scenes on September 23, 2020 and it was a wonderful addition to the Sherlock Holmes film universe. Enola Holmes herself was a great female lead. She fought against societal norms and expectations; looking for her mother and trying to solve a dastardly case at the same time.

Now, we’re getting a sequel.

On November 4, 2022 Enola Holmes 2 was released on Netflix, featuring most of the main cast of the original film. Millie Bobby Brown, known for Stranger Things (2016), makes her return as the star of the film Enola Holmes. Henry Cavill, known for The Witcher (2019), will once again star as Sherlock Holmes. Helena Bonham Carter also reprises her role of Eudoria Holmes– the Holmes family matriarch. The director of the first Enola Holmes, Harry Bradbeer, returns to head the sequel. Jack Thorne is also the screenwriter for the sequel.

The story for the second film is also creative.

In Enola Holmes 2, Enola decides to follow in her brother Sherlock’s footsteps and open up her own detective agency. However, she quickly discovers that life as a female-detective-for hire is filled with a multitude of roadblocks and prejudice. As she’s about to close down her agency, she’s approached by a matchstick girl, who requests Enola to find her missing sister. Enola, excited to be finally working on a case agrees, but soon discovers that the case is both deeply puzzling and political. Eventually, when the case becomes more twisted and dangerous, Enola turns to Sherlock for help.

The story itself takes inspiration from a real life incident which happened in London in 1888, known as the Matchgirls’ Strike. Matchgirls were young girls, usually 4-16 years old, that made matches, and the strike involved employees of the Bryant & May match factory where their lives were being threatened by the use of white phosphorus.

Enola Holmes 2 follows a similar format as the first film, bringing to the screen a tasteful mix of comedy and drama. Acting as a lovely continuation of its predecessor, Enola Holmes 2 is certainly worth the watch.
