On December 8, 2022, Brittney Griner, a WNBA player who was held in Russia for 10 months, was released due to a prisoner swap.
Since February, Griner has been stuck in Russia for bringing in vape cartridges containing hashish oil. As a consequence for her actions, Griner has stayed in detention centers and prisons in Moscow. Her defense team has been trying for months to file for a prisoner swap.
On October 25, her defense team proposed to do a prisoner swap with Viktor Bout in exchange for Brittney Griner. The Russian Court later denied their appeal, which made Griner lose hope of leaving Russia anytime soon.
The situation got so complicated that President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris got involved. Recently, Biden announced that Griner was on a plane, flying from Russia and back home to the United States.
President Biden and his team have been working for months to try and strike a reasonable deal with Russia for a successful prisoner swap. After a few months, Biden was able to make a deal with Russia and bring Griner home.
In a video from CNN, Griner is shown on a plane being told that she is flying back home to the states. Before making her stop home back in Phoenix, Griner will have to take a stop at San Antonio, Texas in the Brooke Army Medical Center.
“Today my family is whole.” stated Cherelle Griner, the WNBA star’s wife.
