Starbucks’ New Olive Oil Coffee Receives Mixed Reviews

By Paige Duane

When one thinks of coffee add-ins, typically the first that come to mind are milk, sugar, or creamer. Hardly anyone takes olive oil with their coffee, however a newly launched line of beverages at Starbucks aims to change that.

Though Starbucks is known for its experimental coffees and refreshers, few anticipated that olive oil flavored drinks were in store from the chain. The Oleteo line of drinks features 5 new olive oil infused drinks. The Oleato Caffè Latte, Oleato Iced Cortado, Oleato Golden Foam Cold Brew, Oleato Deconstructed, and Oleato Golden Foam Espresso Martini are sold exclusively in Italy.

When asked what led him to create the line, Howard Schultz, owner of the rights to the Starbucks name as well as 6 locations, said “Now, there’s going to be people who say, ‘Olive oil in coffee?’ But the proof is in the cup. In over forty years, I can’t remember a moment in time where I’ve been more excited.”

Similar to the keto fad of putting butter into coffee, the inclusion of olive oil reportedly adds a “bitter, slightly savory flavor”. Starbucks has advertised the drinks as “a revolutionary new coffee ritual bringing together an alchemy of the finest ingredients nature has to offer”. The drink line has received mixed reviews, ranging from “delicious” to “terrible”.

The Oleato coffee line could potentially be coming to America Starbucks soon. The company has recently announced plans to release them in Southern California locations this spring. California coffee lovers are eagerly awaiting its arrival at their local Starbucks.
