Schools Should Supply Better Lunches For Students

By Will French

Everyday, students flood the lunch lines, hoping that one day the food quality will turn for the best, but it never does. Year after year, fellow students and I pray we walk to lunch on the first day of school, and the food has changed, but I am disappointed every time. We need change, and we need it now.

Nutrition is a very important factor when it comes to food. As students go through high school, our bodies continue to change and grow each year. According to Nutrition for Growing Bodies, an article written about how good foods are important for a healthy lifestyle, Sarah Klemm stated that: “children and teens need the right fuel for growing, learning and developing. This means plenty of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nonfat or low-fat dairy, and lean protein foods to provide them with the nutrients they need. The secret to feeding a healthy family is to serve delicious nutrient-rich foods at every meal and snack.” This quote presents the opinion  that a healthy diet is very important for high school students growing and developing.

Many students rely on school provided lunches every day. According to School Meal Statistics, it states that 29.7 million students get school lunch every day. That is almost 30 million lunches handed out each day. This statistic brings me to the conclusion that students should be supplied with quality lunches everyday. Lots of schools provide food that is not benefiting your nutritional values.

A quote from the article Cafeteria food in the usa is the worst possible lunch, Angelee Herman states that, “Each school only gets about $1.30 to feed each child, and that doesn’t only cover the cost of the food. It also covers the cost of labor, equipment and electricity. So it comes as no surprise that they can only opt for low-quality foods, as opposed to fresh produce, quality proteins and whole grains. Because of the low budgets, rolled back standards and forced ingredients with longer shelf lives, school cafeterias often opt for processed foods that are high in preservatives.” This proves my argument that schools are providing cheap lunches to students that probably aren’t the most healthy.

Schools need to supply better lunches to high school students that have better nutrition and help in the process of your body growing. We have a school where we are lucky to have good food that looks good, tastes good, and actually is good. Some schools across America don’t have it as good as us, which is why we need to make better lunches a normal thing in high school everywhere.
