What color theme should you go with for Christmas?

By Payton Bayes

As the holidays creep up, people begin the search for the year’s Christmas decorations. Not buying enough to buying too much can lead to decorations that don’t mix too well creating a bunch of random aesthetics. But who wouldn’t decorate? It brings joy and excitement giving the cozy vibes everyone loves on Christmas. No need to skip it but instead plan it.

Starting off with a theme can be as simple as finding a color pallet you like. Decorating in a theme saves money, time, and stress. This can keep you on track without a list of random things you need to get done because of it all being organized!

Being stuck on what colors to go with is very common. Think about your favorite colors, if you want more of a bright version of those or lighter. Before the holidays, you most likely already have some decor that compliments your home making it great for everyday. Instead of taking these down, base your christmas theme off of those existing decor.

It’s great to balance the cool tones with warmer colors. This includes mixing reds with greens and gold or other metallic colors. This color pallet is very traditional and great with starting off if you’re not sure what you want exactly. Another great suggestion comes from “My One Hundred Year Old Home” where it mentions, “Adding different textures—velvet ribbons, woven baskets, metallic finishes—will add depth to your decor and make each color stand out.”

Some great color combinations are red and green, silver and blue, and bright fun colors like a rainbow. The colorful combinations are great for lights while the more subtle colors are good for indoors but they work however you want just make sure to keep a theme!

The red and green combination is the most popular and traditional for Christmas. The colors go way back to a few hundred years ago! “TheOmPlace”mentions, “Some scholars say these two colors represent the leaves and holly berries that made up the crown of thorns on Jesus’ head on the cross.” While others say it goes way back to the 14th century. Over time the colors were finally set as something people would go along with being confirmed with bigger companies and people all over the world!

When it comes to Christmas and the enjoyment of celebrating with cheer, the colors can be a big part of how you celebrate including decorations. Instead of not decorating at all because of the stress and mismatching just plan a theme beforehand! The holidays will be so much brighter when there’s less stress, colors that fit your home aesthetic, and spending your time with family within the decor you have set up.
