What is the best dessert during Christmas?

By Matias Brule

There are many Christmas time desserts, and all of them taste amazing. They all are good in their own way but there is one that is better than the rest. That is the question many have asked, and the desserts we will be comparing are the most popular: Gingerbread cookies, the Yule Log, Christmas cake, and figgy pudding. These are the contenders for the best Christmas dessert

One of the most popular Christmas desserts is, without a doubt, the Gingerbread cookie. According to studies done by news outlet ‘YouGov’ during the holiday season, ginger bread cookies coming in at 12th place world wide, right behind non-festive cookies such as chocolate chip. Showing how the gingerbread cookie is one of the most popular cookies worldwide during our holiday season. Putting it in a high position for being one of the most popular Christmas desserts.

Another contender for the most popular dessert would be the festive Yule Log. One of the less popular dishes compared to the global gingerbread, the Yule log is a traditional celtic cake that was popularized in France. It is considered one of the more flavorful Christmas desserts. “Yeah, the Yule Log tastes really good,” claimed a Benicia high school student when he was asked for the most flavourful Christmas dessert. While not as popular as the rest on this list it’s here for it’s amazing and complex flavours that set it apart from the rest of the desserts on this list.

Christmas cake is possibly one of the most popular festive desserts coming right behind ginger bread cookies in popularity. Christmas cake being a delicious and fruity cake that is dense and creamy it is usually soaked in rum and aged for the holiday season. This cake is very popular with adults and older folk.

When I asked Benicia resident Zachary St.John his thoughts on Christmas Cake he said, “Eh, it’s all right I guess.” So Christmas cake is not one of the best tasting but it is still considered one of the best Christmas desserts.

And last but not least we have Figgy pudding. Figgy pudding is a very similar dish to Christmas Cake. But the main difference is that it’s a kind of pudding instead of cake. It requires a specific flavour pallet. And generally is not the most enjoyed desserts. But it is one of the more popular desserts around the world and is a part of one the most popular Christmas carols. Its popularity and being one of the older desserts gives it a shot towards being the best Christmas dessert.

The best Christmas dessert is an opinion based everyone has their own flavour pallet. But when it comes down to the best tasting dessert that would please the most people I would say it is the Ginger bread cookie. It is simple not the most extravagant, not the hardest to make, and the richest, and not the most expensive. But it’s the most popular Christmas dessert and it tastes amazing too. And it is probably one of the first things you think about when you think of a Christmas dessert.
