The trailer for Backrooms was released recently and it now has the entire internet buzzing with anticipation. The movie will be released on May 29, 2026, just a little over a month away. Backrooms is a horror film based on a popular internet creepypasta of a never ending place with no exit, and it all began with a single picture.
The Backrooms are a fictional location that was brought to life entirely by the internet. It started with a post on 4chan in 2019 of an eerie, empty, yellowish office building. The post blew up due to the creepy, unsettling, and almost familiar vibe people got when they looked at the photo. It became dubbed a liminal space. Another user then gave the place the name the Backrooms.
“If you’re not careful and you noclip out of reality in the wrong areas, you’ll end up in the Backrooms,” the post read, “where it’s nothing but the stink of old moist carpet, the madness of mono-yellow, the endless background noise of fluorescent lights at maximum hum-buzz, and approximately six hundred million square miles of randomly segmented empty rooms to be trapped in.”
Years later in 2022, the Backrooms had resurfaced and completely took over the internet. Youtuber and content creator Kane Parsons posted a series of short horror films about the Backrooms bringing all the new attention to them.
Besides from just Kane, the creation and development of the Backrooms became a group effort by a large number of internet users. People shared their own unsettling liminal space pictures, and added more “levels” to the Backrooms. The original photo of the yellowish office building became known as level 0, with hundreds of more numbered levels added on by different people based on their own uncomfortable pictures of places.
Around the same time, people began creating different creatures or monsters called entities inhabiting different levels, adding to the horror element of the Backrooms. During its peak in popularity people made all kinds of media involving the Backrooms like video games, posts, memes, and even web comics. Hearing something about the Backrooms was unavoidable no matter what platform you were on.
In 2023 the Backrooms movie adaptation was first announced by A24. This year, we’re finally getting it with Kane Parsons, the original creator of the Backrooms Youtube series, directing.
Upon release of the trailer, many of the long-time fans of the Backrooms are now even more excited than before, satisfied with the accuracy of the set compared to the original picture. The trailer also contained Six Forty Seven, a song that was heavily associated with the Backrooms by the internet. This led to a lot of excitement as well as speculation as to what other songs might be included in the movie.
Whether you’re a fan of horror movies or the Backrooms, this unique concept of a movie has many people excited and Backrooms isn’t one to miss once it reaches theaters.
