Recently the new adaptation of the classic Harry Potter story was announced to be released December 2026 as a series on HBO. The story following Harryś life will feature a new cast and the first season is believed to consist of 8 episodes, and titled ¨Harry Potter and the Philosopher´s Stone.
The series is to be directed by Mark Mylod who is known for his successful show Game of Thrones on HBO. A sneak peak of the cast contains Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, Arabella Stanton, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.
The recent announcement of this series was not for everybody and received iffy comments on social media. Many commenters saying it will never be as good as the original movies, or the characters don’t suit the book version, and even disguised racism using Professor Snape. Bella Diaz a student at Benicia High shares, ¨ I don’t think it was necessary to remake the story, the movies aren’t even that old yet.¨
Professor Snape is to be played by Paapa Essiedu, a known Black British performer born and raised in London. Essiedu received lots of different comments after announcing he is cast to play Snape.
Fans on social media commented on suspicions that it’s lazy racism disguised as diversity. Other fans share they have faith in the actor and think he will do great, although he looks too young and happy to play such a grumpy character.
Everybody has mixed opinions on the new live action but nevertheless it is already in the making. Although a new version of the original series will get mixed reviews, older kids and adults that grew up loving Harry Potter won’t forget the impact of the original movies, and may even tune in to see how this show plays out. It could eventually receive a lot of love from the world and lead to the new cast receiving recognition for their parts.
