One of the many sports debates that has been going on for a while is what is the better sport overall, football or basketball?
The first thing we are going to talk about is the viewership of both sports. As the end of the 2025-26 season comes for basketball, we can properly compare it to football because their season had ended much earlier. Football leads in both regular season and playoff viewership in a per game perspective, meaning that every game during the season has higher viewers than each basketball game.
Although, the NBA does lead in two categories: social media viewership and total U.S viewership. In total, the NBA did have higher view counts overall through the entire season, which is due to football having a much shorter season.
The second thing we are going to talk about is the accessibility of both sports. Basketball is a way more accessible sport than football because all you need for basketball is a ball, a court, and a hoop. Football, on the other hand, requires a helmet, pads, football, and a field to play on. This leads to younger people liking to play basketball much more than they do playing football. It is just so much easier to get on a court and shoot around with your friends.
Another reason is just the sports general physicality or pacing. Football is a collision sport so it tests your physical endurance and your toughness. While basketball has a higher scoring and a faster pace which younger people enjoy watching more.
And the final reason is just the future of both of these sports. While football is the bigger sport than basketball at the moment most of the viewers for football are on the older side like gen-x and boomers.
while instead of basketball having a much older audience it has a much younger audience with most of them being in their early 20’s. Which might suggest a big shift on which one of these sports are better in the future.
So in the end both of these are probably the top 2 sports in the world, but which one do you think is better.
