Fro Yo Vs Ice Cream

By Cal Segle

The debate in the dessert world has been going on for a while. What is better? Frozen yogurt (froyo) or ice cream? The first thing we are going to be talking about are the pros and cons of froyo.

One of the many pros of froyo is that it is lower in fat and calories. We can back this up by Kathy Warwick who is a medical advisor, she said “It can contain beneficial nutrients and bacteria, lower levels of lactose and fewer calories than desserts like ice cream,”  a quote from a health line article.

Another way froyo is a healthier option than ice cream because it is nutrient dense which means it contains calcium and protein which are really good for your bone health we can back this up again by Kathy Warwick who said “Frozen yogurt also contains reasonable amounts of some of the nutrients linked with good bone health, like calcium and protein.”

The last pro about froyo is about how customizable you can be when you get fro yo, you’re able to pick your flavor and all your toppings while serving yourself so just imagine yourself walking down and seeing all the options from the reese cups to the sour patch kids and much more.

“I’d pick Frozen Yogurt over ice cream, I like how they offer more toppings for your frozen yogurt.” BHS student Emma Lancaster, a freshman at Benicia High said.

Now onto the cons. One of the many cons of fro yo is the high sugar content; even though froyo can be a healthier option it can be higher in sugar because manufacturers add a lot of  sweeteners in order to balance out the taste from the fermented milk.

Another massive con of fro yo is the “toppings trap.” Fro yo is a healthier option than ice cream just by itself but, all the toppings you add on top of the fro yo just makes it a lot more unhealthy.

Lets switch it up now and go to ice cream, even though ice cream is higher in fat it might be better because the high fat content can slow down sugar absorption and it can also keep you fuller for longer.

Another pro for ice cream is that it’s a better source for vitamin  A, D and B12, which supports brain health and energy production.  We can back this up from a quote from an article by Michigan state who says, “Contrary to popular belief, ice cream contains essential nutrients that your body needs. It is a good source of calcium, which is crucial for maintaining strong bones and teeth. Additionally, ice cream provides vitamins like A, D, and B12, contributing to better immune function and overall health.”

The last pro for ice cream is that it has a lot more flavors than fro yo does i got a quote from Will French, a junior at Benicia High, who said. “I liked the diversity of the flavors in the ice cream parlors

One of the many cons of ice cream is that it has a lot of calories for the small amount of portions you eat compared to froyo.

Ice cream also has a poor nutrient balance while it has small amounts of calcium and phosphorus. Ice cream is generally a lot lower in vitamins and fiber.

So at the end both ice cream and froyo have bad and good stuff about them one has more sugar, one has more vitamins and stuff but in the end which one are you picking froyo or ice cream?
