Deodorant VS Cologne

By Robin Bruno

There has been a secret debate that many people, at some point, think about. What better masks my stench, deodorant or cologne? Well, I don’t know, but we could figure it out together. As in I do all the work and you can just read, or don’t.

First, let’s take a look at deodorant. We don’t automatically or always think about the environmental damage something can cause.

Deodorant contributes to packaging pollution as well as, microplastics, aerosol emissions, disposal and chemical concerns.

Yes, deodorant plays a vital role in personal hygiene, but their negative environmental impacts should not be ignored.

One thing that you can do to help is taking an extra second to choose an eco-friendly brand, switching to deodorant bars or powders to help reduce waste, or making sure you properly dispose of your empty deodorant containers.

Next up is cologne, and perfume too. Production of cologne and perfume also negatively affects the environment, contributing to deforestation, soil degradation, and water shortages due to its use in the manufacturing process.

Designer fragrance dupes do exist and can have less of a burden on the environment since they use synthetic ingredients and use natural components more ethically.

One thing you can do to help is educate yourself about the ingredients used in these products, and maybe find a better alternative, like supporting local or independent brands.

After going over the basics, we have a better understanding of the effects of both, but what’s the difference? We still don’t know which one is superior.

One big difference is how long each one lasts longer when applied, which would surprisingly be cologne because of its higher concentration of essential oils. However, cologne tends to be significantly more expensive than deodorant due to the higher concentration of essential oils.

Deodorant is more likely to cause skin irritation due to antibacterial properties and aluminum compounds. It’s important to note that cologne can cause reactions as well but it is less common.

Knowing the differences can help you alter and improve your hygienic routine by choosing what is right for you and your body. Now choose wisely.
