Regular Show is a Timeless Gem

By Scarlett Tarango

Cartoon Network has had countless gems throughout the years, but Regular Show really stands out compared to the rest to me. No matter what point I am in my life, how long it’s been, or how many times I’ve watched it, I always find myself coming back to this show. In honor of the new Regular Show series currently airing, here’s why I love it so much.

     J. G. Quintel, who also voices one of the main characters, Mordecai, created the show himself. It premiered in 2010 and ran through 2017 for 8 seasons until 2026 with the new series The Lost Tapes.

Quintel says that the idea for the cartoon was based on his college experiences.

“I made this film and it has Mordecai in it and it has Benson in it. It really was just the way we acted in school,” he stated in an interview with Hottopic, “That is me and my friends from school being idiots.”

The show follows Mordecai and Rigby who work at a park together. Despite being a racoon and a bird, they are relatively normal people. Each day, they and their co-workers get into some kind of insane adventure with a crazy supernatural force. Each episode is truly so unique and unpredictable.

One of the things that makes Regular Show so timeless is its humor, the show was originally supposed to be on Adult Swim but ultimately ended up on Cartoon Network. Its jokes really pushed boundaries and its jokes still hold up and are funny to watch even as you get older.

The whole idea of the show makes it really fun to watch. A bunch of regular people always getting into the most insane adventures while still trying to do normal things like dating and going to work. While each episode is its own individual story, the show also continues an overarching storyline.

Over the seasons we get to know each character more as more lore about them drops and as they develop as people. There are also major plot points that affect future episodes. One of my favorite arcs is when Rigby goes back to high school to get his diploma. Throughout the series he is perceived as one of the more lazy characters but he eventually grows and changes to be better for himself.

This is what makes Regular Show so rewatchable. You can select a random episode and not be confused but if you want to sit down and watch the show start to finish and isn’t repetitive.

Regular show is just one of those shows that I think will leave a mark in cartoon history forever. It is truly timeless and I always enjoy watching it. It truly left a mark on a lot of people’s childhoods for the better.
