As a new high school student, it may be stressful trying to decide what classes you should take to set a path for your future. Whether you want to go straight into the workforce, military, or four-year college, there are many different approaches you could take to have a successful future. As a soon-to-be graduate, I am able to give any advice you may need.
In order to graduate high school, there are classes that you are required to take: At least four years of english, two years of mathematics, two years of science, three years of social studies, two years of physical education, one year of any foreign language levels 1 through 3, one year of visual or performing arts, one semester of ethnic studies, and depending on your school, one semester of GFSF (Get Focused, Stay Focused). If you aren’t looking to go to any UC or CSU after college, and may want to either join the workforce or military, these classes will get you through high school with ease.
If you would like to go to college after high school, here are the classes you are required to take: Two years of social studies, four years of english, three-four years of math , two-three years of science, two-three years of foreign language, one year of visual or performing arts, and one year of a college prep elective. It is also recommended to take AP (Advanced Placement) classes, which are college level classes that you are able to take in high school. You will have a higher chance of getting accepted to the college you want to go to if you take AP classes, as they give your GPA (grade point average) a boost.
Although this may seem like a lot, there are certain programs and clubs that you can join to help manage your schedule to have a stress free school year. Things like an Early-Bird class or Math Lab tutoring can allow free access to students who may be struggling with keeping up with their school work. If you’re worried or stressed about high school or college, don’t be. You still have so much time to think about what you want to do with your future.
