The announcement came when the Bruce’s family released a statement saying that the 67-year old actor has recently been diagnosed with aphasia and is “impacting his cognitive abilities.”
The cause of the actor’s diagnosis is unknown at the moment.
Aphasia is a condition that can affect someone’s ability to produce and comprehend both written and spoken communication.
According to the National Aphasia Association, there are multiple possible causes to the condition and it affects about two million Americans, however the most common cause of the condition is by a stroke that cuts off blood to part of the brain.
The condition isn’t necessarily permanent as some show improvement within a few months through long-term speech therapy which can assist the brain in finding new ways to communicate ideas and such.
In the statement from Bruce’s family it read, “to Bruce’s amazing supporters, as a family we wanted to share that our beloved Bruce has been experiencing some health issues and has recently been diagnosed with aphasia, which is impacting his cognitive abilities.” The family continued saying, “as a result of this and with much consideration Bruce is stepping away from the career that has meant so much to him.”
“This is a really challenging time for our family and we are so appreciative of your continued love, compassion, and support.”
Sources have tried to get in contact with the star, but at this time there’s no further information other than the family’s statement.
