Affordable Fashion in The Summer Heat

By Emma Melvin

Accessorizing can be relatively easy to do in colder weather, you can simply layer items. But what about the summer? The secret to this isn’t bulky statement pieces, but more about the right set of multiple smaller and lighter pieces.

Start off with a flowy maxi skirt and lightweight tank top. These can be easily found at local thrift stores like Goodwill or Ecothrift. Make sure to check the tags for fabrics like rayon, cotton or linen; as those are more lightweight and fit for the summer.

As far as shoes, try to avoid boots or high tops; as they build up lots of sweat and are not very summer-weather friendly. Instead, try more open shoes, like sandals or Mary Janes (which are available with or without the heel).

Now that you have the base of your outfit, it’s time to add accessories! For your jewelry, make sure you have metals that will not tarnish. Sweat from the heat will cause your jewelry to easily tarnish if it’s too cheaply made.

If you prefer gold jewelry, gold stainless steel is a good option for a more affordable choice. The price ranges from $5-$50 for most brands, and can be found on the Pandahall website, or at Walmart and Target.

If you prefer silver jewelry, stainless steel is also a good option, as well as sterling silver which is about $3-5 per gram. This can be found on the quince jewelry website, Etsy and Walmart.

For specific pieces, you should stick to small stud earrings, thin ring bands, and lightweight chain necklaces/bracelets.

Now it’s time for the final touches. You can add more simple accessories like claw clips, and chain belts. Claw clips are available at various mall stores, such as Ulta, Hot Topic, or Leviosa. Chain Belts are available at a local shop in Benicia, called Elisa’s Cottage. Enjoy your new summer look!
