New Chromebook Policy

School districts are now making it where students can only use their chromebooks during certain school hours to reduce screen time and are limiting take-home privileges and will instead be using carts that will hold the chromebooks and will only be used during an appropriate time. There are multiple different reasons schools are starting this new chromebook policy because it can improve student focus, reduce excessive screen time, and they decline academic performance.

Around 10 districts in America say Chromebooks are making students un-focused and are using their chromebooks as a replacement for their phone. April 2026, Los Angeles became the first major school district to require screen time limits to the chromebooks. The Los Angeles school district board voted to restrict the chromebook use of students and instead start doing work on pen and paper. The board member in charge of the voting, Nick Melvoin says “We have responsibility as one of the largest districts to draw a line in the sand when it comes to this recalibration and start the conversation,”

Many parents in America think the new chromebook policy is a good thing to have for their children because they already spend too much time on screens as they are constantly on their chromebooks at school and on their phones/tablets at home. Anya Meksin, a mother of 2 says “This is an Historic reform that we hope will trickle down to the rest of the country very, very quickly,”

The new Chromebook policy in America is going to increase the academic levels in schools as it will take away the privileges of students using ai for their assignments/tests. Working on paper will have students use their own brain and will increase their knowledge. This policy is slowly spreading across the U.S. and will soon be a new rule used by every school district as there are already 6 states across America like Alabama, Utah, Kansas, Missouri, Tennessee, and Virginia that have introduced the chromebook policy to restrict screen time.
