The Devil Wears Prada is a popular 2006 movie that is still relevant today. Twenty years later, in 2026, they released the sequel, the Devil wears Prada 2 on May 1st. It has received really positive reviews, getting a 78% on the tomatometer and a 87% on the popcornmeter on rotten tomatoes, and has received $233 million worldwide in the box office in just the five days of being released.
The movie follows the original cast from the first movie, which includes Anne Hathaway as Andy Sachs, Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly, Emily Blunt as Emily Charlton, and Stanley Tucci as Nigel. The sequel surprised many with the fact that it wasn’t just a sequel, but actually had its own story that focuses on the decline in journalism and physical media in modern times. This is a very real issue today, and they did a really good way of showing how each character faces their own struggles while also keeping to the original movie. Overall, it had a really good balance between the original movie, as well as adding in new and modern takes.
The movie has been receiving a lot of positive feedback throughout the media. Screen film even wrote an article called, “5 Reasons why the Devil Wears Prada 2 Ruled the Box Office.” They bring up, “In this case, Disney recognized that there was a genuine appetite for another tale in the world of high fashion centered on Anne Hathaway’s Andy Sachs and Meryl Streep’s Miranda Priestly.” In another article by Variety, they stated, “The good news is that ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ is not willfully degraded. It’s a sequel made with intelligence and respect for both its predecessor and the legions who still love it, so much so that it functions less as a follow-up than as a kind of tribute act.”
The movie definitely lives up to the original. Makayla Honciano is a senior at Benicia High school who loves the original movie and watched the sequel. She says, “I liked how they did parallels between the new movie and the old movie. For instance, in the beginning when Andrea is walking in the park, there is a table selling turquoise belts, the similarity from the first movie where Miranda and Nigel were choosing a turquoise belt for an orange dress, and Andrea called fashion, stuff. The ending scene of the second movie with Andrea wearing a vest that was the same blue cerulean sweater that she first wore when interviewed with Miranda in the first movie, that she cut the sleeves off to make a vest. I appreciated how Nigel finally got what he deserved from being in the shadow of Miranda, and he got to speak on behalf of Runway. Appreciated the feature of Lady Gaga for runway music.”
Overall the movie was a big success and it can be appealing to those who loved the original, love fashion or just want a fun movie to watch with a deeper meaning.
